Hidden gems in Laos.

Dirt roads running alongside the river with great views of the water and surrounding mountains. Ride by scooter - the kind of track you stumble onto and have entirely to yourself.

A local waterfall on the Thakhek Loop with a series of pools and cliff jumping rocks - the highest is around 7-8 meters. More of a local family spot than a tourist stop, which is exactly why it is worth going. Small cash parking fee.

A small natural pool at the base of a cliff with water so clear it looks filtered. The approach is a narrow red dirt road with open mountain views - the setting earns it as much as the swim. Entry around 40k kip (~$2). Cold and refreshing even on hot days.

The deepest turquoise of all the Blue Lagoons, and the one almost nobody makes it to. Go at 9:30am and you may have the bamboo platforms and rope swing entirely to yourself. There is even a Middle Eastern restaurant on-site, which is about the last thing you expect to find in the jungle.

Another raw dirt trail through the Vang Vieng backcountry with zero tourist traffic. The pin marks the start - ride as far as you are comfortable. Motorbike only, no buggies or ATVs. Take it slow.

Most people stop at the lagoon outside. Walk past it and a short trail leads deep into the mountain, where two completely dark pools sit inside the cave. Rent a headlamp for a small fee at the entrance. The lagoon itself is also nice but gets busy - the cave is the real reason to come.

A cascade of emerald pools a short drive from the Kuang Si parking lot — completely separate from the main falls, no shuttle needed. Almost everyone walks straight past the turnoff, heading straight to Kuang Si and missing this entirely. You'll likely have it to yourself. Full guide here

A massive cave 20 minutes from Thakhek with a river running through it - you cross a swaying bridge to get inside and swim through part of it. The back exit leads to Green Climbers Home, a climbing village built into the karst cliffs where travelers spend days learning to scale the limestone. Entry is around 20k kip total. Green Climbers Home is closed during wet season (May - September).

Everyone on the Thakhek Loop goes to Kong Lor. Almost no one comes here - a cave system in the same valley believed to stretch over 15 kilometers, parts of it still unexplored. You turn off the main road toward the cliff face, cross two wooden bridges, and walk into something that feels genuinely undiscovered.
