The Ring Road is busy. Turn off it and there are gravel shortcuts through waterfall canyons, a glacier few people walk up to, and dirt roads in the east that lead somewhere nobody else is.

Drive close to the glacier and park in the lot, then follow the trail towards it. Few people go to see it and it’s incredibly beautiful at sunset. It’s also where they filmed the ice planet in interstellar!

A sharp and beautiful mountain face right off the ring road. Most drive right by, but there’s a gravel road right off the main road that lets you drive towards the mountain. Great spot for photos.

Route 939 off of the Ring Road. Stunning shortcut, gravel winding road through a canyon filled with waterfalls. Drove during the midnight sun and was absolutely empty and an unforgettable experience. 4x4 recommended but not strictly necessary.

Beautiful waterfall off the Öxi Pass in Iceland. Park on the side of the road, there are trails that go right up to the waterfall.

Borgarfjörður Off-roading
Drive · Borgarfjörður
Found a random dirt road and decided to follow it. Steep, lots of winding turns. After 15 minutes you’ll get to the top of these reddish brown mountains, with 360 views over the sea and snowcapped mountains across the bay. 4x4 100% necessary. Roads are very rouhj and steep.
